Cellulite

Cellulite (or superficial lipodystrophy) is the result of :

  1. An abnormal local accumulation of adipose cells (fat) under the skin,
  2. Coupled with water retention (local oedema)
  3. And an accumulation of toxins trapped in hardened collagen fibres (fibrosis).

This fatty mass is located in the hypodermis, i.e. in the deep layer of the skin. When the volume and number of adipocytes increase, the surface of the skin appears bumpy/wavy (orange peel skin).

The causes of cellulite

Cellulite is the result of a complex combination of factors affecting skin structure, blood circulation and subcutaneous fat tissue. Here are some of the main causes of cellulite:

  1. Genetics : Genetic predisposition plays an important role in susceptibility to cellulite. If members of your family have also had cellulite, you may be more likely to develop it.
  2. Hormones : Hormonal fluctuations, such as those occurring during puberty, pregnancy, the menopause and contraceptive use, can influence the formation of cellulite. Female hormones, particularly oestrogen, can contribute to the appearance of cellulite by affecting blood circulation, connective tissue and fat distribution.
  3. Age : Cellulite tends to worsen with age, as the skin loses its elasticity and firmness. This can make cellulite bumps more visible.
  4. Lifestyle and diet : A diet high in saturated fats, sugars and salt, as well as excessive alcohol consumption and smoking, can contribute to cellulite. In addition, a sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical exercise can reduce blood circulation and muscle tone, encouraging the accumulation of subcutaneous fat.
  5. Connective tissue : The connective tissue that links the skin to the muscles can become rigid and contract unevenly, creating pockets of fat that give the characteristic appearance of cellulite.
  6. Rapid weight loss : Rapid weight loss can lead to a reduction in the volume of fat cells, which can worsen the appearance of cellulite.
  7. Blood and lymph circulation : Poor blood and lymph circulation can lead to an accumulation of fluids and toxins in the tissues, which can contribute to the appearance of cellulite.

It is important to note that cellulite can affect people of all shapes and sizes, and is not necessarily linked to being overweight. The combination of these factors can vary from person to person, which explains why cellulite can be more or less pronounced from person to person.

Cutaneous Factors Contributing to the Appearance of Cellulite

In terms of the skin, the main causes of cellulite are linked to alterations in the structure of the skin and subcutaneous connective tissue. Here are some of the main cutaneous causes of cellulite:

  1. Thinning of the epidermis : The epidermis, the superficial layer of the skin, can thin with age, making cellulite bumps more visible.
  2. Stiffness of connective tissue : The connective tissue that links the skin to the muscles can become stiffer and less supple, creating uneven tension and encouraging the formation of cellulite.
  3. Degradation of collagen and elastin : Collagen and elastin are key components of the skin that give it its firmness and elasticity. With age and other factors, these structures can break down, which can contribute to the appearance of cellulite.
  4. Expansion of fat cells : The increased size of fat cells can exert pressure on connective tissue, leading to deformation of the skin’s surface and the formation of bumps characteristic of cellulite.
  5. Inflammation and blood circulation : Chronic inflammation can damage blood vessels and capillaries, disrupting blood circulation and the nutrition of skin cells. This can contribute to skin deterioration and the appearance of cellulite.
  6. Insufficient hydration : Insufficient hydration can affect the quality of the skin, making it less firm and elastic, which can accentuate the appearance of cellulite.

It’s important to understand that cellulite is the result of a complex combination of factors, and skin causes often interact with other factors such as hormone therapy, genetics, lifestyle and diet. A comprehensive approach to preventing or reducing the appearance of cellulite can include appropriate skin care, a balanced diet, hydration and regular exercise.

The different types of cellulite

  1. Aqueous cellulite : barely visible, diffuse and supple. Often due to circulation problems, this type of cellulite is not painful. However, it is accompanied by swollen legs (water retention) and a feeling of heavy legs.
  2. Adipose cellulite : also painless, localised and soft, it is mainly the result of an unbalanced diet and a lack of physical exercise.
  3. Fibrous (or indurated) cellulite : a more advanced stage, this cellulite is painful, hard to the touch and can take on a purplish hue. It has often been present in the tissues for a long time, requiring more effort to remove.

Aesthetic medicine treatments for cellulite

To treat cellulite, various aesthetic medicine treatment options can be considered to combat or reduce this condition deeply embedded in the dermis:

  • Cryolipolysis and focused ultrasound (HIFU) are techniques commonly used to treat adipose cellulite.
  • Radiofrequency is a recognised and effective medical treatment in the fight against cellulite.
  • Pressotherapy is often recommended to improve lymphatic and venous circulation and reduce the appearance of cellulite.
  • Shock waves are a treatment option for fibrous cellulite.
  • Mesotherapy is sometimes used to improve local blood circulation and reduce fibrosis.
  • Although suction or massage techniques can temporarily relieve water retention, they do not directly treat the main cause of cellulite, which is the stiffening of the collagen trabeculae between the fat lobules of the hypodermis in women.

In many cases, it may be beneficial to combine several of these treatments to achieve optimal results. It is essential to consult a qualified aesthetic medicine professional to assess your specific situation and determine the best treatment approach for your needs. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of treatments can vary from person to person and that each case of cellulite is unique.

How does EMTONE® work on cellulite and sagging skin ?

The revolutionary Emtone® technology works by simultaneously emitting radiofrequency (thermal effect) and targeted pressure energy (mechanical effect). The therapeutic temperature of 42 degrees is reached within 60 to 90 seconds of applying the applicator. The heat is controlled in real time throughout the session for the patient’s comfort. The treated area is heated evenly with strong mechanical stimulation.

It treats the real causes of cellulite, getting to the root of the problem, rather than eliminating symptoms and improving appearance alone. This ensures rapid and lasting results.

EMTONE® is the only device that treats all 5 causes of cellulite and sagging skin. Simultaneous emission has been shown to have a much greater impact on connective tissue than consecutive application of the two energies.

Duration of treatment

At your first appointment, your doctor will work with you to design a personalised Emtone® treatment programme.

The majority of patients follow a sequence of 6 sessions, usually scheduled once or twice a week. Each session is usually divided into two 12-minute segments, with the exception of the abdomen, which is treated in a single 12-minute session.

The Emtone® treatment sequence is conducted by an experienced nurse assistant.

DEAL PROFILE FOR EMTONE®: WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THIS TREATMENT ?

Emtone® is an ideal solution for anyone looking for a non-invasive approach to reducing cellulite, whether soft or hard, while significantly improving the skin’s appearance and physiological function. This innovative technique is perfectly suited to the following profiles:

– All stages of cellulite, whether soft or hard.
– Sagging skin with a granular texture.
– Regardless of skin phototype.
– All body types, regardless of body mass index (BMI).

If you’re looking for an effective, non-surgical solution to treat cellulite and revitalise the quality of your skin, Emtone® offers a tailored response to a range of aesthetic concerns. Our qualified team is here to assess your specific needs and customise a treatment plan to help you achieve your goals of wellbeing and confidence in your appearance.

Is the procedure painful ?

The perceived sensation of the treatment is often compared to a hot stone massage combined with intense mechanical vibrations. The treatment is carried out in a relaxing reclining position.

What results can I expect from EMTONE® ?

Clinical data shows that the treatment reduces cellulite in 93% of patients, with an average reduction in thigh circumference of 2.2 cm, as well as reducing abdominal skin laxity in women following vaginal delivery in 90% of cases.

This unique combination, applied simultaneously, produces a synergistic effect that leads to a 59% increase in collagen, a 64% increase in elastin and a 44% increase in dermal thickness.

As EMTONE® works by stimulating the growth of new collagen and improving local tissue circulation, results are not immediate. In general, results are visible after a few weeks to a few months, although some patients have reported improvements immediately after a single treatment session. Results generally increase over the months following treatment.

Maintenance sessions are recommended once or twice a year, depending on age and skin quality.

What happens after an EMTONE® session ?

After an Emtone® treatment session, patients quickly notice that their skin experiences a gentle warmth or a slight pinkish hue, a reaction that naturally subsides within a matter of minutes.

Importantly, there are no reported side effects or social limitations associated with Emtone®, enabling patients to promptly resume their regular activities without interruption. To optimize the results obtained from an Emtone® session, it is imperative for patients to incorporate regular physical exercise and maintain a well-balanced diet. Being particularly mindful of sun exposure is also crucial to safeguard against the potential for premature skin aging.

Before each treatment session, several key precautions should be taken into consideration. It is recommended to abstain from using scrubs and creams containing fruit acids, as these may potentially interfere with tissue conductivity. In cases where laser treatment is included as part of the Emtone® protocol, it is advisable to refrain from using self-tanning products to ensure optimal results.

For whom are EMTONE® sessions not recommended ?

Please note that EMTONE® sessions are not recommended for people :

– who have a pacemaker, cardiac defibrillator or metallic implant
– Have heart or epileptic problems
– Suffering from a hernia or who have undergone surgery in the last 6 months
– Pregnant
